Is aFormerMuslim.com an Islamaphobic website?

No, our aim is not to encourage hate against Muslims. We strongly condemn any attempt to harass or harm any Muslim anywhere in the world because of their religion. We firmly believe that every human being is made in the image of God. Therefore, every person deserves respect, dignity, and love.

Moreover, we condemn any act of defacement against mosques or other properties, including childish attempts to offend Muslims by defiling copies of the Qur’an.

How does aFormerMuslim.com define Islam?

Let’s be very clear here; we don’t believe that Muslims define Islam. We believe Islam is defined by Allah and Muhammad’s teachings.

Is there a difference between Islam and Muslims?

We believe, Islam is not Muslims, and Muslims are not Islam. The two are not the same.

Islam is an ideology (a set of ideas). It is a worldview. We believe that we can criticise Islam without criticism of Muslims. For example, Allah commands Muslims to beat their wives (4:34). One can criticize the command to beat wives without criticizing Muslims.

Muslims are people (individuals). They are adherents of Islam. However, to say that ‘If the Qur’an and hadith teach something, then all Muslims believe it’ is wrong. For example, there are many Muslims who do not beat their wives. Either they don’t subscribe to the commands of Qur’an or they are ignorant about it.

Islam is not Muslims, and Muslims are not Islam. We can criticise Islam without criticizing Muslims.
